We Live in Brooklyn, Baby (2014)

Brooklyn was cool, before cool was in.

Standing its ground — just across the river from the bustling metropolis of Manhattan— Brooklyn has successfully maintained its own distinct cultural identity, defined by neighborhoods that have kept their core ethnic values over many decades. Each neighborhood a unique gem, each offers photographers a fertile dynamic background to capture a glimpse of the Brooklyn experience.

Spanning thirty years, from the 1980s through today — We Live in Brooklyn, Baby is a visual journey that brings together powerful, personal works by more than 30 photographers from across this proud borough, representing every aspect of Brooklyn’s diverse identity, heart and soul.

This extraordinary evening of Brooklyn photography first debuted at the Lodz Photofestival in Poland on June 6, 2013. We Live in Brooklyn, Baby had its US premiere on September 18, 2014 as part of the opening night of Photoville 2014. Curated by Brooklyn’s own Jamel Shabazz, the screening was set to a Brooklyn inspired soundscape of music and found sounds — selected live by DJ’s Chris Devlin and Prince Klassen.
